Canine Preventative Healthcare

ennis-vet-clinic-preventive-healthcareWe work with you to monitor your pet against six key pillars of preventive pet health care: twice-a-year exams, dental care, behavior, parasite control, nutrition and vaccinations.

Prolong Your Dog's Life

We provide a full range of preventive healthcare services to help your dog live a longer, happier life and to increase the odds of detecting problems early.

Annual preventive care for dogs typically includes:

  • Twice a year Physical Examinations at which time we will take a complete medical history, make nutrition recommendations, assess behavior, and review any known medical conditions. During the examination we will perform a:
    • Ear and Eye Examination
    • Cardiopulmonary (Heart and Lung) analysis
    • Temperature Reading
    • Abdominal Palpation
    • Dental Exam
    • Dermatological Exam
    • Musculoskeletal Evaluation
  • Dental Care is just as important for our four legged friends as it is for us humans. Along with regular brushing and feeding the correct diet, regular dental check-ups are advisable. Plaque and tartar buildup can lead to serious health problems for your pet (see the dentistry section of our website for more info)
  • Good pet Behaviour is a sign of good pet health. Similarly, bad pet behavior can be a medical issue in disguise. Pet behavior is a living, breathing, barking barometer of their overall wellness. Knowing how to “read” your dog is an important part of their ongoing preventive care. The more you know, the sooner you can address underlying health problems. Unfortunately, there are plenty of dogs whose anxiety or anti-social behaviour can make everyday life a bit of a trial both for them and their human companions. We are happy to offer advice at any stage and we have a great network of reliable trainers, behaviourists and walkers. We want our patients to feel at ease during their visits to the clinic and we go out of our way to reassure them. Social calls are welcome at any time!
  • Parasite Control Products to control parasites such as intestinal parasites (such as roundworms), fleas and ticks. Controlling these parasites helps protect your dog and your family members from easily transmitted parasites. Regular treatment is essential as pets going outdoors will be regularly exposed to eggs from other pets. We will tailor our treatment recommendation to the age, species, size, and behavior of your pet. Please note that on-the-shelf supermarket products marketed as worming treatment will not contain prescription worming drugs.
  • Nutrition  is very important throughout your pet’s life, from birth to senior years. Nutritional requirements change throughout life and there are different requirements between different breeds. We are trained to give advice regarding which diet is most suitable for your pet’s needs. We will  monitor your pet’s weight and advise on daily feeding requirements.
  • Vaccines based on your dog’s lifestyle and/or breed. Core Vaccines include Rabies and Distemper. Our veterinarians may also recommend additional vaccines such as Lyme, Bordetella (Kennel Cough), Leptospirosis, and Influenza.
